Kalem 1.0
Rooted in the idea of transformation through connection, Kalem 1.0 is a sculptural floor lamp created within the collaborative practice of NO ON studio by Yulian Mikov and Dimitar Vranchev.
The name Kalem originates from old Balkan terminology associated with grafting - the act of joining separate trees so they can grow together as a stronger and more resilient organism. Reflecting this philosophy, the collection explores the coexistence of different materials and forms, embracing transformation, imperfection, and natural evolution as essential elements of beauty.
Kalem 1.0 symbolizes the union of two distinct wooden elements merged into a new monolithic presence. Crafted from discarded dried wood, the piece is preserved using traditional burning techniques that naturally blacken the surface without paint or synthetic finishes, allowing the material’s texture, memory, and character to remain visible.
Balancing raw materiality with sculptural refinement, the lamp functions both as atmospheric lighting and as a collectible art object. Its expressive form makes it suitable for a variety of contemporary interiors, including living spaces, bedrooms, hospitality environments, hotel lobbies, offices, and architectural settings.
More than a lighting piece, Kalem 1.0 reflects a dialogue between preservation and transformation -revealing the quiet beauty that emerges when materials are allowed to evolve naturally over time.
Kalem 1.0 was a part of the Object of relationships exhibiton which was a part of Melda Design Festival 2023, Sofia, Bulgaria.
